The traditional Thai New Year Festival, Songkran, has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The announcement was made at the 18th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Botswana. This prestigious recognition adds to Thailand’s previous listings, including “Khon” in 2018 and “Nuat Thai” in 2019.

## Symbolism and Celebration

Songkran is a traditional festival that symbolizes the start of the new year and involves cleansing rituals and paying respects to elders and ancestors. The festival is celebrated from 13-15 April and includes water parties and visits to temples to observe ancient rites and make merit. The Tourism Authority of Thailand promotes the festival as a national event, with plans to make the 2024 celebrations even grander.
