Dealers may still sell physical tickets, using a single device such as a tablet, smartphone, or smart TV to access the GLO’s website via the Pao Tang application.

Payment and Availability

The Government Lottery Office (GLO) is introducing a new way to purchase lottery tickets in Thailand. Starting from March 17th, buyers will have the option to purchase digital lottery tickets through registered lottery dealers. These digital tickets will be available at the controlled price of 80 baht

Customers must use the Pao Tang app to purchase digital tickets within the specified timeframe, as tickets are non-transferrable. Established in 2022 through the Pao Tang platform, approximately 23 million digital tickets are available for each bi-weekly draw, offering convenience for lottery buyers seeking an alternative purchasing method.

Asia Shifts from Digital Transformation to Global Leadership

Gambling in Thailand presents a complex landscape shaped by cultural history and stringent laws. While traditional forms of gambling have been a part of Thai society for centuries, the current legal framework is quite restrictive.

Current Legal Framework

Gambling has deep roots in Thai culture, with evidence of wagering on local events dating back to more than a century. However, the introduction of formal laws began with the Gambling Act 1935, which prohibited most forms of gambling.

Today, the only legal forms of gambling in Thailand are horse racing in Bangkok and the government-sponsored Thai lottery. The Playing Cards Act further restricts private ownership of playing cards, with no more than 120 allowed without government approval.

The Stance on Casinos

Despite Thailand’s strict regulations on gambling, illegal casinos continue to thrive in the country. For instance, in major cities like Bangkok and Pattaya, underground gambling dens operate discreetly, attracting locals and tourists alike.

The government’s tough stance against these establishments is evident in recent raids and crackdowns on illegal gambling activities. For example, in 2020, authorities busted a large illegal gambling operation in Bangkok, resulting in arrests and the confiscation of large sums of money. These efforts reflect the ongoing battle to eliminate illegal gambling in Thailand and protect citizens from its negative impacts.

The introduction of digital lottery outlets on March 17th is just one step in the government’s larger strategy to regulate the gambling industry and promote responsible gaming practices. Further measures and collaborations with law enforcement agencies are essential to effectively curb the proliferation of illegal casinos in the country.

Online Gambling

The introduction of digital lottery outlets in Thailand on March 17th signifies a shift towards modernization in the country’s gambling industry. While the digital age has brought about online gambling opportunities, the government’s strict control over this domain is evident in its efforts to monitor unauthorized activities and take legal action against perpetrators. This is seen in Thailand’s crackdown on illegal online betting platforms, such as the recent bust of a major online gambling operation that was found to be transacting billions of baht. By implementing digital lottery outlets, the government aims to provide a regulated and responsible avenue for gambling enthusiasts, ensuring a safe and secure environment for players while also generating revenue for social welfare programs.
