According to iiMedia Research, the pet industry in China has proliferated in recent years, with a pet economy valued at 490 billion yuan (2.4 trillion baht) in 2022. It is expected to nearly double by 2025.

The Southeast Asian pet market, particularly in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, has seen remarkable growth. With a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13% over the past five years, the region shows no signs of slowing down.

In Thailand, ttb analytics reported that the pet market has grown at an average annual rate of 17.5% between 2019 and 2024.

This year, the value of the pet market in Thailand is projected to reach 74.8 billion baht, an increase of 12.4% compared to 2023.

This growth is also supported by a broader economic context. As the middle class expands and urbanization continues, pet ownership is becoming more common. The Asia-Pacific pet market is projected to reach a staggering $100 billion by 2025, with China, Japan, and South Korea at the forefront of this expansion.

Which segments have led to the growth of the pet economy?

Within the pet economy, the food and toys market segment stood out as the leader in growth, contributing 196.3 billion baht to total revenue, an increase of 8.64% compared to 2022. This segment alone generated a profit of 14.263 billion baht.

This was followed by care services, which experienced growth, generating 23.562 billion baht in revenue. During the first half of 2024, 191 new establishments were opened in this segment, indicating a continuous upward trajectory.

The boom in growth behind the industry is attributed to changing consumer behavior, particularly the trend of “pet humanization.”

This concept relates to how pet owners treat their animals as family members. This change has led to increased spending on premium pet products, health services, and even technological solutions for pet care.

There is also a growing trend, especially among Generation Z, to have exotic pets. Sales of products for these unconventional pets have grown by more than 50%, surpassing the growth of sales of products for dogs and cats.

Another recent trend is the so-called “Petfluencers,” pets with many followers on social media who generate income for their owners through content creation.

Thai Government Initiatives for the Pet Industry

Recently, the Thai government announced support for pet products and service companies.

It explained that Thai companies are being encouraged to follow the trend of “pet parents.”

The agency will promote the opening of new export markets, raise the quality of Thai pet products, and increase competitiveness in the global market.

Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce has driven the growth of the pet economy. It aims to promote Thai products, unites companies to increase business alliances, and increase the export value of Thai pet products, including food, snacks, services, and pet health products.

What are the current challenges for the pet industry in Asia?

The pet industry in Asia has been experiencing rapid growth, but it still faces several challenges that could impact its growth. Some of its main challenges are:

Regulatory hurdles

Different countries in Asia have varying regulations regarding pet ownership, import/export of pet products, and animal welfare standards. Navigating these regulations can be complex for businesses, potentially slowing down market expansion and innovation.

Supply chain disruptions

The pet industry, like many others, is vulnerable to supply chain disruptions. Issues such as shipping delays, raw material shortages, and geopolitical tensions can affect the availability and cost of pet products. Ensuring a stable supply chain is crucial for maintaining growth.

Health and safety concerns

The rise in pet ownership has also led to increased concerns about zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans). Ensuring the health and safety of pets and their owners is paramount, requiring significant investment in veterinary services and public health initiatives.

Cultural differences

Asia is a diverse continent with varying cultural attitudes towards pets. In some regions, pets are considered family members, while in others, they are seen more as working animals or status symbols. These cultural differences can influence consumer behavior and demand for pet-related products and services.

The concept of pet humanization

The pet adoption rate in Asian countries has seen a remarkable increase in recent years, reflecting a broader global trend towards pet ownership. This surge is largely attributed to demographic changes, economic advancements, and a cultural shift towards viewing pets as integral family members.

In Asia, the concept of pet humanization has taken a strong hold, especially in countries like China, where over half of pet owners regard their pets as children, and a significant portion sees them as family members or friends. This emotional bond has translated into a growing demand for pets, with adoption rates climbing steadily.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also played a role in this trend, as people sought companionship during lockdowns, leading to a spike in pet adoptions. For instance, South Korea witnessed a 50% growth in pet ownership from 2014 to 2018, and the trend has continued to rise. Similarly, China has experienced a substantial increase in pet adoption, with projections indicating it may soon have the largest pet population globally.

The rise in pet adoption is supported by the expanding middle class and increasing urbanization across Asia. As families become smaller and people marry later, pets are often seen as substitutes for children, further fueling the adoption rates.

Moreover, the pet care market is adapting to this growth, with a significant push towards premiumization. High-quality pet food, healthcare, and other services are becoming more prevalent, catering to the needs of the new wave of pet owners who are willing to invest in the well-being of their pets.

In summary, the pet adoption rate in Asian countries is not only changing; it’s thriving. With the dual forces of economic growth and cultural acceptance, the future of the pet market in Asia looks promising, offering vast opportunities for businesses and a deeper understanding of the human-animal bond.
