EGAT plans to expand EV charging outlets from 211 to 321, aiming to lead Thailand’s EV sector. This includes a management app and consultations for charging infrastructure, enhancing its competitive edge.

Key Points

  • The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) plans to enhance its EV charging network by adding 110 new outlets, increasing its total from 211 to 321, with 100 more expected next year.
  • EGAT aims to capitalize on the growing EV market, including providing a smartphone app for queue management and offering consultations on charging infrastructure.
  • This expansion aligns with Thailand’s rising battery EV numbers, as authorities develop standards for EV chargers, positioning EGAT as a key player in the country’s EV ecosystem.

In its quest to establish a prominent position within the electric vehicle (EV) charging market, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced a significant expansion of EV charging stations throughout Thailand. Building on its extensive 50-year history in electricity generation and transmission, EGAT plans to increase its current portfolio of 211 outlets by adding 110 new stations, with an ambitious target of an additional 100 outlets by the end of the following year. Nissara Thammapala, the director of innovative energy solution business management at EGAT, asserts that this growth will catalyze the company’s influence and relevance in the burgeoning EV sector, which she describes as a “blue ocean market,” indicating untapped potential.

This strategic expansion aligns with broader developments as Thailand’s Department of Land Transport reported that the country is home to 141,008 battery EVs. Concurrently, regulatory bodies, including the Thai Industrial Standards Institute and the Energy Regulatory Commission, are actively formulating standards for EV chargers, while the Engineering Institute of Thailand is focusing on installation protocols. Amid these regulatory advancements, EGAT is positioning itself as a pivotal player in Thailand’s evolving EV ecosystem. In addition to expanding charging facilities, EGAT is also enhancing customer experience through a smartphone app designed to streamline queue management at charging stations, and it offers consultancy services regarding the technicalities of charging infrastructure. Furthermore, EGAT showcased its newly enhanced EV charging facilities at the Bangkok EV Expo 2024.

In summary, EGAT’s proactive measures to proliferate its charging outlets underscore its strategic intent to scale its EV solutions in a competitive landscape increasingly dominated by larger rivals.
