Ellie Furuya shares reflections on her Phuket wedding, wishing she’d embraced local cuisine, prepared for rain, adhered to budget, educated guests on the area, and made it more kid-friendly.

Key Points

  • Wedding Location and Background: Ellie Furuya married at Rosewood Phuket in November, influenced by her diverse backgrounds and aspirations for a memorable setting. Despite facing a rain-soaked ceremony, she cherishes the chosen location but acknowledges aspects for improvement.
  • Key Changes for Future Planning: Furuya wishes she had fully committed to local Thai cuisine throughout the wedding, adhered to a stricter budget to manage expenses effectively, and provided better cultural guidance for guests to explore Thailand.
  • Inclusivity and Family Considerations: Reflecting on the adult-centric atmosphere of the celebration, Furuya regrets not making the event more kid-friendly, suggesting enhancements like custom activities and informative materials to create a more inclusive experience for families.

Ellie Furuya, a Hong Kong-based influencer and founder of Rii Swim, reflects on her elaborate wedding in Phuket, Thailand, expressing a desire for a few changes that could have enhanced the event. Married in November at the luxurious Rosewood Phuket resort, Furuya, who hails from a Japanese family and met her husband Jon in Hong Kong, found the venue a suitable choice due to Jon’s Thai heritage and the locale’s appeal to their diverse guest list.

Despite the picturesque setting, Furuya recounts several logistical missteps, particularly the unexpected rain that transformed their outdoor ceremony. They had planned for a ceremonious occasion during the dry season, yet tropical weather proved unpredictable, leading to muddy paths and slippery moments for her bridal party. This incident underscored the importance of always preparing for weather contingencies during outdoor events.

In addition to weather issues, Furuya regrets the decision to shift away from fully embracing local cuisine. While their guests enjoyed a Thai buffet during the prior party, the wedding meal featured Mediterranean dishes, which, although well-presented, lacked a connection to the Thai setting. If given another chance, Furuya emphasizes that she would prioritize Thai food throughout their celebrations to authentically reflect the culinary culture of their wedding destination.

Financial management is another area Furuya identified for improvement. Initially planning for a guest list of 50 that swelled to 139, the budget similarly escalated, ultimately averaging $500 per guest. This surge was aggravated by extra offerings, revealing the scalability of wedding expenses, especially in destination ceremonies.

Furuya also noted a missed opportunity to educate her guests about Thai culture. Many attendees were visiting Thailand for the first time, and insufficient guidance resulted in them largely remaining on the resort premises. Additionally, she reflects on creating a more inclusive atmosphere, especially for families. While they provided babysitting services, the celebration inadvertently catered more to adults, suggesting that simple activities for children could have encouraged more family-oriented participation.
