Thai authorities seized a record 1.65 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine in Bangkok, linked to organized crime. Four men were arrested; the drugs originated from Africa, destined for Europe, US, or Australia.

This bust marks one of the largest drug interceptions in Thailand’s history, highlighting the growing role of Southeast Asia as a trafficking hub. Officials are now working with international agencies to trace the criminal network responsible and prevent further shipments.

Thai authorities made a significant drug bust, intercepting over 1.5 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine, marking a record seizure. Senior narcotics officials revealed that the shipment, which originated from Africa and passed through India, was destined for markets in Europe, the United States, or Australia.

The confiscated drugs, weighing approximately 1.65 tonnes, were cleverly hidden in cotton rolls within a Bangkok warehouse. Following a tip-off, four men were arrested at the scene. This seizure is notable as it represents the first time such a large quantity of methamphetamine has been captured, according to officials.

The region is known as a critical transit point for illicit drugs from the “Golden Triangle,” where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge. Myanmar is particularly notorious for methamphetamine production, often controlled by ethnic armed groups. The United Nations reported a surge in methamphetamine seizures across East and Southeast Asia in 2023, as organized crime intensified its operations.

This escalation in drug trafficking has heightened concerns among regional governments and international organizations, prompting calls for stronger cross-border cooperation and enhanced law enforcement measures. Despite ongoing efforts, the complex interplay of political instability, corruption, and the entrenched power of organized crime syndicates has made combating the issue increasingly challenging.
