Chinese tourist bookings to Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries declined during the Lunar New Year period in 2025. This decrease is attributed to safety concerns following the kidnapping of a Chinese actor in Thailand.

  • Thailand experienced a 15.6% decline in Chinese tourist bookings amid safety concerns following the kidnapping of a Chinese actor.
  • Chinese tourists are the largest group of foreign visitors to Thailand, with over 6.2 million arrivals in 2024.
  • Despite overall increases in tourist numbers for Lunar New Year, Chinese arrivals to Thailand are expected to decrease compared to last year.

The data shows a 15.6% drop in Chinese arrivals to Thailand, with similar declines in other countries like Vietnam and Singapore. Some countries, such as Japan and Australia, saw increases in bookings.

Chinese tourism plays a vital role in Thailand’s post-Covid recovery, with Chinese nationals projected to remain the largest group of foreign tourists in 2024. This influx is expected to significantly boost Thailand’s economy, particularly in key sectors such as hospitality, retail, and transportation.

Popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai are preparing to welcome an increasing number of Chinese visitors by enhancing services, offering tailored travel packages, and expanding Mandarin-language support. Additionally, the Thai government continues to collaborate with Chinese travel agencies to promote cultural exchanges and streamline visa processes, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers. As tourism rebounds, the sustained interest from Chinese tourists underscores their importance in driving Thailand’s economic growth and revitalizing its tourism-dependent industries.
