Thailand approved acquiring four Swedish Gripen E jets in 2025 for 22.8 billion baht, modernizing its fleet, replacing F-16s, amid regional tensions and ongoing defense and submarine procurement.
The Thai government announced its approval to purchase four Swedish Gripen E fighter jets, valued at 22.8 billion baht (around USD 635 million). This decision, confirmed on August 5, 2025, aims to modernize Thailand’s air fleet, with delivery expected by 2028. The new jets will replace aging F-16s at Wing 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima, following a thorough ten-month evaluation process that favored the Swedish fighters over upgrading existing American jets.
Thailand already operates 11 older Gripen C/D aircraft, enhancing interoperability and cost-efficiency. The expansion reflects Thailand’s long-term plan to bolster its military capabilities and logistical support, aligning with its strategic objectives.
This procurement announcement came shortly after a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, following border clashes. The Thai cabinet also finalized a long-delayed submarine deal with China, modifying the contract to address EU export restrictions. With a 2025 defense budget of 200 billion baht, Thailand continues significant modernization efforts for its armed forces.
