Countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Hong Kong illustrate both the promise and the obstacles of the next decade of mobile connectivity. These regions showcase rapid advancements in mobile technology, offering significant opportunities for economic growth and digital inclusion. However, challenges such as infrastructure limitations, regulatory hurdles, and cybersecurity concerns remain key issues that must be addressed to fully unlock their potential.

The Promises of 6G

  • Next-Level Performance: 6G is expected to surpass 5G with even higher data rates (exceeding 100 Gbps), ultra-low latency (less than 1 millisecond), and massive increases in connection density.
  • Integration with Emerging Technologies: 6G will be “AI-native,” with artificial intelligence integrated at its core to optimize network performance. It will also enable truly immersive experiences like holographic communication, digital twins, and advanced extended reality (XR).
  • Global Connectivity: A key feature of 6G will be the integration of terrestrial, aerial, and satellite networks, providing seamless and uninterrupted global coverage.

The Challenges of the 5G to 6G Transition

Even as 5G networks continue to expand worldwide, the industry is already setting its sights on 6G.

Yet the leap to the next generation of mobile connectivity is fraught with obstacles that extend beyond technical ambition. One of the most pressing challenges lies in the physical limits of the spectrum itself. 6G is expected to push into sub-terahertz bands, promising ultra-low latency and unprecedented speeds. However, these high frequencies suffer from steep propagation losses and limited range, meaning networks will require far denser deployment and new antenna materials to function effectively.

Another challenge is the integration of AI-native functions and environmental sensing directly into the network. 6G is envisioned as more than a communications system; it will be context-aware, fusing connectivity with machine intelligence and environmental data. While this vision could unlock transformative applications, it introduces additional layers of complexity in design, energy efficiency, and data privacy.

The architecture of 6G will also expand beyond terrestrial towers. Networks are expected to combine satellites, aerial platforms, and ground infrastructure into hybrid systems. Achieving seamless integration across these layers presents serious interoperability issues and cost implications, particularly in ensuring consistent latency and reliability.

Compounding these technical hurdles are the geopolitical dynamics of standardization. Different blocs are competing to define the rules of 6G, raising the risk of fragmentation into rival ecosystems. China, for example, is aggressively promoting its IMT-2030 framework, while others favor more open collaborative approaches. This contest will determine not only technological dominance but also global market access.

Finally, there is the question of commercial viability. Building ultra-dense networks, developing high-power chips, and managing the rising energy demands of 6G could make early deployments prohibitively expensive. Without clear business models or compelling use cases, the rollout of 6G may struggle to justify the massive investment required.

The Growth Drivers

Despite the significant hurdles in moving from 5G to 6G, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong offer fertile ground for next-generation networks.

One of the strongest catalysts is exploding data demand. These are mobile-first societies where people rely heavily on smartphones for daily life, fueling constant consumption of video streaming, online gaming, fintech services, and social media. This creates a natural foundation for faster, more reliable networks.

Another driver is the rapid push toward industrial digitalization. Key sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, and mining are increasingly dependent on high-capacity, ultra-low latency private networks. As factories and supply chains embrace automation and the Industrial Internet of Things, demand for advanced connectivity will only grow.

Government initiatives also play a critical role. Across the region, smart city agendas are embedding 5G into infrastructure and IoT projects, creating a framework that will later enable 6G applications. These programs focus on everything from intelligent transport systems to connected healthcare and energy grids, positioning connectivity as a pillar of economic development.

Finally, the rise of regional innovation ecosystems reinforces these trends. Tech hubs in Bangkok, Jakarta, and Hong Kong are experimenting with immersive technologies like AR/VR, as well as fintech platforms and AI-driven services.

These cutting-edge use cases require the kind of speed, capacity, and reliability that only next-generation networks can deliver, making the transition to 6G not just desirable, but inevitable.

Which companies are leading the 6G smartphone industry?

As Asia moves deeper into the 5G era and prepares for the dawn of 6G, countries across the region are charting different paths shaped by geography, regulation, economics, and ambition.

While giants like China, Japan, and South Korea dominate global headlines in the 6G race, emerging players in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong are quietly building their own momentum. Each market faces unique obstacles but also possesses distinct advantages that could determine its role in the next wave of connectivity.

Indonesia

Indonesia faces unique hurdles in expanding next-generation connectivity. Its vast archipelagic geography makes nationwide 5G coverage expensive, and rural areas remain underserved. Operators are further constrained by high spectrum fees, while the affordability gap continues to limit access to 5G-ready devices.

Yet the potential for growth is enormous. With a large, young, and mobile-first population, demand for digital services such as gaming, fintech, and e-commerce is booming. Industrial sectors including manufacturing, mining, and logistics are beginning to pilot private 5G networks, while government-backed smart city initiatives in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali add momentum.

For now, 5G remains concentrated in Indonesia’s major urban centers. However, as device affordability improves and industrial adoption gathers pace, the country is well-positioned to scale rapidly in the coming years.

Thailand

Thailand’s 5G rollout has been among the most advanced in Southeast Asia, spearheaded by operators such as AIS and True Corp. Still, significant challenges remain. Operators face low average revenue per user (ARPU) and difficulties in monetizing the heavy investments already made in infrastructure. Regulatory bottlenecks in spectrum allocation also create friction, slowing innovation.

At the same time, Thailand’s prospects are strong. The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) positions the country as a regional hub for smart factories and IoT applications, while the government’s Thailand 4.0 strategy supports digital transformation across industries. The tourism and entertainment sector also presents fertile ground, with opportunities for immersive AR/VR tourism experiences and live event streaming powered by 5G and, eventually, 6G.

Overall, Thailand boasts some of the region’s most advanced 5G infrastructure. The critical challenge now is unlocking profitable business models and use cases that justify investments before the next wave of 6G arrives.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s compact geography makes it well-suited for dense 5G coverage, but deployment is not without obstacles.
