At WCIFIT in Chongqing, ASEAN-Western China ties deepened beyond trade toward supply chain integration. Chongqing-Vietnam trade reached $6.2B in 2025, up 87%. The China-Laos-Thailand railway and ILSTC corridor are transforming regional logistics, reducing transit costs significantly.

Key Points

• At Chongqing’s 8th WCIFIT, ASEAN-Western China ties are deepening beyond trade into supply chain integration, with Chongqing-Vietnam trade reaching $6.2B and Chongqing-Thailand trade totaling $4.7B in 2025, driven by rising ASEAN demand for Chinese electromechanical products.

• The China-Laos-Thailand railway under the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) is transforming regional logistics, offering twice-weekly precision freight services and reducing transit times by connecting western China to global markets via ASEAN maritime gateways.

• ASEAN nations are expanding diplomatic presence in western China, with Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar establishing Chongqing consulates, while Indonesia plans a Chengdu office, reflecting growing institutional commitment to strengthening regional economic cooperation.

ASEAN–Western China Economic Integration Deepens

At the 8th Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT) held in Chongqing, ASEAN–Western China economic ties demonstrated a clear shift from conventional trade toward integrated supply chain cooperation. A strong ASEAN presence — including government representatives and business delegations — participated in exhibitions and matchmaking sessions. A landmark outcome was the signing of a 2026–2028 action plan between Chongqing and Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, targeting two-way investment and trade facilitation. Customs data revealed Chongqing–Vietnam trade reached $6.2 billion in 2025, with Vietnamese imports surging 87% year-on-year, signaling accelerating regional economic convergence.

Manufacturing Links and Logistics Infrastructure Drive Regional Supply Chains

Chongqing’s exports remain dominated by electromechanical products — nearly 90% — including laptops, integrated circuits, and automotive components. As Vietnam and Thailand advance their manufacturing sectors, demand for intermediate goods from Chongqing is rising, deepening industrial interdependence. Underpinning this trend is the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC), which Thai Consul General Sake Nopthaisong described as operating like “a metro line for international freight.” By connecting western China through Guangxi and Yunnan to ASEAN ports and ultimately to Singapore, the ILSTC significantly reduces transit times and logistics costs, addressing western China’s historically landlocked disadvantages.

Expanding Diplomatic Presence Reinforces Long-Term Partnership

ASEAN nations are strengthening their diplomatic footprint in western China, reflecting growing strategic interest in the region. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar now maintain consular offices in Chongqing, while Singapore and Thailand are represented in Chengdu; Indonesia has announced plans to open a Chengdu consulate. Vietnamese Consul General Bui Nguyen Long highlighted Chongqing’s role as a critical node linking the ILSTC, the China–Europe Railway Express, and the Belt and Road Initiative. Notably, Bui also referenced Ho Chi Minh’s historical presence in Chongqing during the 1930s–40s, suggesting that deep-rooted historical connections are now evolving into concrete foundations for contemporary industrial and economic cooperation.
