Bangkok flood protection comes at a heavy rural cost in thailand

For six consecutive monsoon seasons, Kamonach has relied on a boat to reach her home in central Thailand, despite it being elevated over three meters above the ground.

For six straight monsoon seasons, Kamonach has had to navigate to her central Thailand home by boat. Even though her house stands elevated more than three meters off the ground, seasonal floodwaters regularly flood her living area.

Devastating Annual Flooding in Central Thai Villages

Other villagers endure even more severe hardship. Thanet, who lives alongside his 93-year-old mother, watches for months as relentless floodwaters rot timber, loosen wall panels, and warp floorboards. “Even after we repair them, the same damage happens again every year,” Thanet explained.

The Fallout of the Post-2011 Flood Strategy

This ongoing crisis stems from major flood defenses built following Thailand’s catastrophic 2011 floods. To safeguard economic and industrial centers like Bangkok and Ayutthaya along the Chao Phraya River, the Thai government erected aggressive infrastructure—such as flood barriers, water gates, and expanded embankments—to channel water away from major urban hubs.

These urban safety measures have shifted the environmental burden onto surrounding rural communities. Encasing low-lying cities in physical barriers disrupted natural water drainage pathways. As a result, standard water releases from the Chao Phraya Dam now cause significantly more severe damage to unprotected rural villages than in the past.
