Indonesia launched a new sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, focusing on economic transformation and SOE competitiveness. It will manage seven SOEs, with assets nearing US$900 billion, enhancing global stature.
Launch of Danantara
Indonesia has officially launched the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Board, known as “Danantara”. This sovereign wealth fund aims to accelerate economic transformation and boost the global competitiveness of Indonesia’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs). At its launch on February 24, President Prabowo emphasized that Danantara should function as a national development tool to optimize Indonesia’s wealth management. It represents Indonesia’s second sovereign wealth fund, following the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) in 2021.
Unique Role of Danantara
Unlike INA, which primarily focuses on asset management and co-investments, Danantara has unique authority over SOEs. It can oversee capital allocation, restructuring, and mergers directly. This distinct responsibility aims to streamline management and drive efficiency within these enterprises, underscoring Danantara’s critical role in strengthening Indonesia’s financial sector and fostering sustainable development.
Future Investments and Impact
Danantara plans to initially manage seven SOEs, including three state-owned banks, two energy firms, a mining enterprise, and a telecommunications company. Post-acquisition, Danantara’s assets under management are projected to reach approximately US$900 billion. This substantial capital base positions Danantara among the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, significantly impacting the global financial landscape and enhancing Indonesia’s economic stature.
