Philippines-Canada FTA talks begin in 2025, aiming to boost trade, investments, and cooperation in technology, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure, enhancing market access and investor protections.
Philippines and Canada Initiate Free Trade Talks in 2025
In early 2025, the Philippines and Canada officially began exploratory negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA). This move aims to deepen economic ties and modernize trade regulations. Given their strong collaboration across sectors such as technology, agriculture, education, clean energy, and infrastructure, the agreement is anticipated to boost trade by reducing tariffs, enhancing investor protections, and expanding market access for both nations.
Bilateral Trade Trends and Key Exports
In 2023, bilateral merchandise trade between the Philippines and Canada totaled US$3.4 billion. Philippine exports to Canada amounted to US$2.2 billion, with key items including insulated wire, gold, and integrated circuits. Conversely, Canadian exports to the Philippines reached US$1.2 billion, comprising cereals, ores, meat, and machinery. By the first quarter of 2024, Canadian exports to the Philippines already exceeded US$1 billion, indicating growing trade momentum.
Investment Opportunities and Sector Potential
Canadian FDI in the Philippines was valued at US$983 million in 2021, contributing to a total FDI stock of US$25.9 billion in ASEAN by 2023. The Philippines itself had a US$8.6 billion FDI stock as of November 2024, showing a 4.4% increase year-on-year. The Philippine government’s incentives under the Development Plan foster modernization, especially in agriculture, where Canadian agri-tech solutions like precision farming and climate-resilient inputs can improve productivity and efficiency.
