The center is situated on the outskirts of Myawaddy, a bustling trading hub bordering
the Thai town of Mae Sot. Authority in the Myawaddy area is divided between the
Burmese military government and a local militia allied with the Karen ethnic minority,
functioning as a border guard force.

Witnesses along the Thai border reported hearing explosions and observing smoke
rising from the center over the past few nights.

More than 1,500 people have already fled Myanmar to Thailand after the Myanmar military
shut down a major online scam centre.

The KK Park site, identified by Thai officials and independent experts as hosting
a [major cybercrime operation](https://apnews.com/hub/cybercrime), was raided by
the Myanmar military in mid-October as part of operations that began in early September
to crack down on cross-border online scams and illegal gambling.

The Naresuan Task Force of the Thai military, operating in northern Thailand, reported
on Monday that sections of KK Park were destroyed by explosions conducted by the
Myanmar military and its border guard allies. The blasts caused debris to damage
multiple homes on the Thai side of the border.

Many individuals who fled Myanmar reportedly worked primarily in central areas,
often under coercion. Authorities in Thailand’s Tak province, where temporary shelters
have been established for them, stated that these individuals hail from 28 countries,
including Thailand. Efforts are underway to assess whether they were victims of
trafficking and to determine if they can be repatriated to their countries of origin,
such as India, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

Myanmar has gained notoriety for hosting cyber scam operations that lure workers
from other countries under false pretenses, offering them legitimate job opportunities
but ultimately trapping them and coercing them into engaging in illegal activities.

Cambodia is another major center for such operations, which attracted international
attention on October 14, when the United States and the United Kingdom enacted sanctions
against the organizers of a major Cambodian cyber scam gang, and its alleged leader
was indicted in a U.S. federal court in New York. This move highlighted the growing
global concern over cybercrime networks operating in Southeast Asia. The sanctions
and legal actions aim to disrupt the activities of such organizations, which have
reportedly exploited thousands of victims worldwide through fraudulent schemes.
Cambodian authorities have since faced increased pressure to crack down on these
operations and collaborate with international partners to address the issue effectively.
