Vietnam and Singapore, with trade relations since the 19th century, enhance their partnership through a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), focusing on renewable energy, AI, infrastructure, and smart city initiatives.

Historical Background of Vietnam-Singapore Relations

Trade relations between Vietnam and Singapore have historical roots extending back to the 19th century, influenced by colonial powers, France and Britain. Diplomatic ties took a formal route following Vietnam’s unification in 1975. Both countries strategically focused on fortifying their economic and political associations. Joining ASEAN in 1995, Vietnam and Singapore leveraged this platform to strengthen bilateral cooperation further.

What is a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership?

A Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) acts as a high-level agreement promoting extensive collaboration across diverse sectors between nations. CSPs are designed to tackle shared issues by expanding previous agreements to incorporate emerging fields. Vietnam and Singapore’s CSP concentrates on areas like renewable energy, AI technology, and infrastructure projects, enhancing their cooperation to confront global challenges efficiently.

Recent Developments and Economic Collaborations

Vietnam emerges as a key “China Plus One” manufacturing base, with Singapore being its largest foreign investor, contributing significantly to Vietnam’s foreign direct investment. The CSP extends collaboration in the digital economy and smart city initiatives, with Singaporean companies playing a pivotal role. Urbanization efforts include integrating major Vietnamese cities into a smart city network, emphasizing digital infrastructure and e-payments, indicating deepening economic ties.
