The growing popularity and widespread usage of QR codes, especially in payment systems,
highlight their convenience and efficiency. Quick Response (QR) codes, designed
to store data, are globally recognized for enabling seamless information access
and facilitating cashless transactions. In Thailand, the Bank of Thailand’s “Cross-
border QR Payments” initiative has significantly contributed to their extensive
adoption across the nation.

 * QR Code scanning systems, also known as “Cross-border QR Payments”, have become
increasingly popular and essential for businesses due to their convenience, with
their absence potentially causing customer frustration.
 * In 2024, China, Malaysia, and Thailand led global QR Code usage among individuals
aged 16 and above, with monthly usage rates of 67.4%, 66.1%, and 61.5% respectively,
reflecting the growth of digital transactions and cashless societies.
 * QR payments provide a convenient, secure, and fee-free method for tourists to
pay for goods and services in Thailand, contributing to a seamless payment experience
and promoting digital transformation in the country.

According to a 2024 study by Data Reportal, China leads in QR code usage via smartphones
among individuals aged 16 and above, with 67.4% of the population using QR codes
monthly. Malaysia and Thailand follow closely, with usage rates of 66.1% and 61.5%
respectively. This trend reflects Thailand’s growth in digital transactions and
increasing acceptance of cashless payments.

QR payments also offer a convenient and secure payment method for tourists in Thailand,
allowing transactions without cash or credit cards. Other top countries using QR
codes include Argentina, Brazil, Vietnam, Switzerland, Taiwan, Sweden, and Colombia.
The global average for monthly QR code usage is 50.8%, with the United States and
Russia ranking 43rd and 30th respectively.

QR codes have become a transformative tool in the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN), driving financial inclusion, economic integration, and digital
payment adoption across the region’s 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia,
Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

## Regional Cross-Border Payment Integration

ASEAN has pioneered an interoperable QR code payment ecosystem, a global first aimed
at linking the region’s diverse economies. In November 2022, five major economies—
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand—signed a memorandum
of understanding to connect their QR-based payment systems. This initiative, known
as ASEAN Payment Connectivity, allows users to scan QR codes for transactions in
local currencies, bypassing the U.S. dollar as an intermediary. By 2023, bilateral
linkages were operational, such as between Indonesia (QRIS) and Malaysia, with plans
to expand to Vietnam, Brunei, and others by 2025. This system supports the 18 million
intra-regional tourists annually, potentially facilitating $4 billion in consumer
spending if it captures 15-20% of transactions.

## Country-Specific Adoption

 * **Thailand**: Thailand ranks among the world’s top three for QR code usage (
alongside China and Malaysia), per Data Reportal’s 2024 findings. Its PromptPay
system integrates with QR codes, connecting with Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam,
and Indonesia. Thai tourists and merchants benefit from seamless cross-border
   payments, enhancing tourism and trade.
 * **Indonesia**: Indonesia leads Southeast Asia in e-wallet and QR payment adoption.
The Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), launched by Bank Indonesia,
saw transactions soar to 98.5 trillion rupiah ($6.5 billion) in 2022. QRIS is
now accepted in Malaysia and Thailand, with plans to include Japan by late 2025.
 * **Singapore**: Singapore’s SGQR, the world’s first unified payment QR code, processed
1.2 million transactions in January 2021, quadrupling from its 2020 debut. It’s
linked to Thailand and expanding, supporting merchants and reducing cash reliance.
 * **Malaysia**: Malaysia’s high QR adoption rate reflects its tech-savvy population.
Its system connects with Indonesia and Thailand, cutting transaction costs by
up to 30% and offering exchange rate buffers for users.
 * **Philippines**: The Philippines uses QRPH, integrating with ASEAN neighbors
to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and migrant workers.
It’s part of the broader push for financial inclusion.

## Broader Applications

Beyond payments, QR codes in ASEAN streamline banking processes. Banks use dynamic
QR codes for secure transactions, replacing one-time passwords, and for identity
verification, linking to digital forms or staff profiles.

### Economic and Social Impact

 * **Financial Inclusion**: With high mobile penetration (smartphones are affordable
and widespread), QR codes bridge gaps for the underbanked, especially in rural
areas of Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. They require minimal infrastructure compared
   to card-based systems.
 * **De-dollarization**: The ASEAN QR system promotes local currency use, reducing
reliance on the U.S. dollar, a trend accelerated by geopolitical shifts like
   sanctions on Russia in 2022.
 * **Tourism and Trade**: Standardized QR payments simplify transactions for travelers
and merchants, boosting the region’s $19 billion intra-ASEAN tourism economy.

### Challenges and Future Outlook

While adoption is strong, challenges include fragmented implementation in less-developed
members like Laos and Cambodia, and security concerns following incidents like the
2020 KuCoin hack in Singapore. Standardization efforts, led by central banks and
fintechs, aim to address these by 2025, with Japan’s JPQR potentially joining the
ecosystem, further expanding its reach.

ASEAN’s QR code use exemplifies a 21st-century fintech solution, preserving local
currencies while fostering regional unity. By leveraging smartphone ubiquity and
regulatory cooperation, the region is setting a precedent for digital payment integration
worldwide.
