Northeast Thailand, also known as Isan, is the largest and most populous region
of the country, with a rich and diverse culture, history and natural resources.

However, for a long time, it has been overlooked and underdeveloped by the central
government and the private sector, resulting in high poverty rates, low education
levels and limited opportunities for its people.

That is changing now, as the region is becoming a new economic hub for Thailand
and the Greater Mekong Subregion.

## The China-Laos high-speed rail project

The China-Laos high-speed rail project is seen as crucial for transforming Thailand’s
Northeast into an economic center of the Greater Mekong Subregion. The government
plans to invest approximately 760 billion baht over the next five years, with significant
contributions from both the public and private sectors.

Six provinces in the Northeast are expected to experience growth in areas such as
construction, logistics, auto dealerships, oil and gas, and healthcare. Businesses
are advised to prepare for these opportunities, including focusing on environmental
aspects. Additionally, there is a call for the government to accelerate the development
of the transport network in the Northeast and promote investment in the Northeastern
Economic Corridor.

Some of the key sectors that are driving the growth of Northeast Thailand are agriculture,
tourism, logistics, renewable energy, digital technology and creative industries.
These sectors are not only generating income and employment for the local population,
but also enhancing the value and quality of the region’s products and services,
as well as preserving and promoting its unique identity and heritage.

Northeast Thailand has a lot of potential and advantages to become a new economic
hub for the country and the region. It has a strategic location, connecting Thailand
with its neighboring countries of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. It has abundant
natural resources, such as water, land, minerals and biomass. It has a large and
young workforce, with over 20 million people, accounting for more than 30% of Thailand’s
population. And it has a vibrant and distinctive culture, with its own language,
cuisine, music, art and festivals.

To realize this potential and overcome the challenges that still exist, such as
inequality, environmental degradation, social exclusion and political instability,
Northeast Thailand needs more support and collaboration from all stakeholders, including
the government, the private sector, the civil society and the international community.
By working together to create a more inclusive, sustainable and innovative economy
for Northeast Thailand, we can ensure that the region and its people can enjoy a
better quality of life and contribute to the prosperity and stability of Thailand
and the Greater Mekong Subregion.
