On February 19, China urged Thailand to continue restricting essential services like electricity and internet access to Myanmar. This pressure aims to compel Myanmar’s government and ethnic groups to take action against criminal gangs involved in scams. The situation will be discussed in a high-level meeting today between Chinese and Thai officials, focusing on collaborative efforts to combat these illicit operations.
China proposed creating a partnership framework that includes Thailand, Myanmar, and itself, with aspirations to involve other nations later. China has requested Thailand to hold a formal meeting to strategize against scam operations. Chinese authorities believe the severing of services is essential, despite concerns from Myanmar’s government about its negative impact on local residents.
One proposed solution involves establishing a collaborative mechanism between Thailand, Myanmar, and China, with intentions to expand this partnership to additional countries in the future, reported the Bangkok Post.
In response to rising human trafficking issues, China seeks Thailand’s assistance for rescued Chinese nationals. Approximately 200 individuals rescued from scams in Myanmar are set to return home soon. Reports also highlight that many victims from various countries require verification of their status before safe repatriation. The complexities of this situation illustrate a growing regional concern over crime and humanitarian issues.
