Several Asian countries, including Thailand, Singapore, and China, are experiencing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, prompting renewed public health measures.
- Thailand: Has reported a significant increase in cases and deaths, with the Songkran festival identified as a contributing factor. Authorities are ensuring the availability of protective supplies and offering digital access to doctors for COVID-19 patients. A total of 187,031 cases from January through mid-May and 46 COVID deaths.
- China: Has observed an increase in positive COVID-19 test rates, with the dominant strains being XDV and XDV.1, which exhibit stronger immune evasion. Authorities recommend mask-wearing during long-distance travel, especially for high-risk groups. In April, 168,507 cases were confirmed, including 340 severe cases, and nine deaths.
- Singapore: Has also seen a rise in cases, though authorities state that the circulating variants are not more transmissible or severe. They attribute the increase to factors like waning population immunity and recommend vaccination boosters for vulnerable individuals. Weekly cases rose from 11,100 to 14,200, with average daily hospitalizations increasing from 102 to 133. No COVID casualties have been reported this year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a global increase in COVID-19 cases, with Thailand having the highest number, followed by Brazil, Britain, Greece, and France.
In China, the dominant COVID-19 strains circulating are XDV and XDV.1. According to COVID-19 expert Zhong Nanshan, these strains exhibit stronger immune evasion, meaning individuals with previous infections or vaccinations are just as much at risk.
Chinese authorities suggest that to prevent another pandemic, people wear masks when traveling long distances. Zhong Nanshan added that high-risk groups, particularly those aged 65 and above or with underlying health conditions, should take stronger protective measures.
In Thailand, to combat the resurgence of COVID-19, the authorities are taking several measures:
- Ensuring availability of protective supplies: The government is monitoring the distribution of face masks, antigen test kits, and hand sanitizer to ensure adequate supplies are readily available at fair prices.
- Digital access to doctors: The Ministry of Public Health is providing COVID-19 patients with digital access to doctors and enabling rapid drug delivery without human contact. Patients can consult doctors via apps like SaluberMD, Clicknic, and Mordee free of charge.
In Singapore, the factors contributing to the increase in COVID-19 cases include waning population immunity. The circulating variants are descendants of the JN.1 variant of COVID. However, health authorities indicated that these variants are not more transmissible or causing more severe symptoms.
Specific recommendations are being given to vulnerable populations, which include the following:
- Individuals aged 60 and older
- Medically vulnerable individuals
- Nursing home residents
These vulnerable populations have been advised to get COVID vaccination boosters. Additional advice includes minimizing social interactions and unnecessary travel when unwell, as well as wearing a mask in crowded areas. These measures are particularly important to reduce the risk of severe illness and to protect those who may have weaker immune systems. Staying updated on public health guidelines and practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, can also contribute to minimizing the spread of the virus.
