**China’s climate transition is at a critical juncture, with rapid renewable energy
growth needing stronger grid infrastructure and policy reforms to meet carbon neutrality
goals and reduce fossil dependence.**

## Progress and Challenges in China’s Climate Transition

China is at a critical juncture in its climate journey. While significant strides
in renewable energy are reshaping its emissions profile, challenges remain, especially
in deepening decarbonization through infrastructure and policy changes. From 2020
to 2024, energy consumption and carbon emissions rose rapidly, exceeding economic
growth rates. This increase places pressure on China’s interim climate goals under
the 14th Five-Year Plan, as reductions in energy and carbon intensity lag behind
expectations.

## Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Gaps

Electricity demand has surged, with the power and transport sectors driving emissions
growth, while industrial emissions stabilize. Despite China’s leadership in renewable
energy, with 649 gigawatts of new solar and wind capacity in 2023 and 2024, fossil
fuels still meet much of the demand. Geographical imbalances and inadequate transmission
infrastructure hinder the full utilization of renewable energy, as many installations
lie far from high-demand coastal regions, causing rising curtailment rates and underutilization.

## Future Directions and Reforms

Enhancing grid infrastructure and integrating renewables efficiently are crucial
for China’s clean energy potential. This involves investment in ultra high-voltage
transmission, smart grids, and energy storage. Reforms in the power sector, such
as creating a national electricity market and prioritizing low-carbon generation,
are essential. Encouragingly, by early 2025, renewable electricity growth outpaced
overall demand. If sustained, this trend could lead to a peak in power sector emissions,
positioning China to achieve its climate goals and set a global benchmark in decarbonization.
