Thailand’s new Prime Minister had a vision: to welcome millions of Chinese tourists
back to the country through a visa-free policy and enhanced security measures provided
by Chinese police patrols at major tourist attractions.

Unfortunately, the initial vision has not been fully realized. It is projected that
the number of Chinese arrivals in Thailand this year will only reach one-third of
the pre-pandemic level. This disappointing start presents a significant challenge
for Thailand, a Southeast Asian country that heavily depends on tourism income from
Chinese visitors.

## Key Takeaways

 * Chinese tourist arrivals in Thailand are expected to be lower than anticipated
in 2023 due to changing travel trends, economic challenges, and reduced spending
   power.
 * [The shooting incident in Bangkok](https://www.thailand-business-news.com/tourism/101365-chinese-tourist-killed-in-bangkok-shopping-mall-shooting)
and negative portrayals of Thailand in a Chinese movie have contributed to a
   decline in Chinese tourist numbers.
 * The Thai government is taking steps to attract more Chinese tourists, including
visa-free entry and collaboration with Chinese influencers, but the recovery
of Chinese tourism in Thailand remains uncertain.
 * [Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for this year has been revised down to 2.5%](https://www.thailand-business-news.com/economics/112813-thailands-gdp-to-grow-by-2-5-in-2023-down-from-3-forecast)
from the earlier projection of 3%.

Thailand had anticipated an increase in Chinese tourist arrivals after reopening
its borders post-coronavirus pandemic. The initial forecast by the tourism bureau
was 5 million visitors from China in 2023. However, the actual arrivals from China
before December only reached around 3 million, and the estimated total by the end
of the year is now around 3.5 million visitors.

Earlier reports indicated that there were concerns about the impact of the movie“
[No More Bets](https://www.thailand-business-news.com/china/100168-chinese-blockbuster-could-derail-thailands-tourism-recovery)”
on Chinese visitors’ decision to avoid Thailand. The movie portrays Chinese individuals
who are deceived into going on a business trip abroad, but end up being forced to
engage in illegal activities such as online investment scams, gambling, and cryptocurrency
fraud in an undisclosed Southeast Asian country.

[The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)](https://www.tatnews.org/) is now projecting
that the country will receive 3.4-3.5 million Chinese tourists this year, falling
short of the initial target of 4 million. The lower numbers are attributed to China’s
sluggish economy and a shift towards domestic tourism.

The prime minister’s optimistic hope that suspending visa requirements would increase
foreign tourists has not been realized. Despite the visa rules being suspended for
nationals of China, India, Russia, Taiwan, and Kazakhstan, this measure has not
significantly boosted the number of Chinese tourists. Flights from China are still
operating at only 60% of the pre-Covid volume. Currently, due to the economic slowdown
and negative reports about Thailand in Chinese media, many Chinese tourists prefer
to vacation domestically.

Thailand is still trying to recover from the decline in Chinese tourism, which greatly
benefited its economy. In 2019, tourism accounted for 11.5% of Thailand’s GDP, with
over 11 million Chinese visitors. However, due to the pandemic in 2022, Thailand
only welcomed 11 million international visitors, with China accounting for just
273,567 of those arrivals.
