Moo Deng, a two-month-old female pygmy hippo born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya, Thailand, has gained immense popularity, leading to a marked increase in visitor numbers. According to zoo officials, attendance has doubled since her birth in July, largely due to the fan frenzy surrounding her adorable appearance and playful demeanor. The name “Moo Deng,” translating to “bouncy pig,” reflects her lively nature, which has further contributed to her viral status online.
Despite her popularity, Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoi, has expressed concern over visitor behavior, urging people to respect the animal and its environment. Reports have surfaced of visitors mistreating Moo Deng by throwing shellfish and splashing water to rouse her from sleep, prompting the zoo to install CCTV cameras around enclosures and threatening legal action against offenders. To enhance the visitor experience, the zoo recommends that guests visit during Moo Deng’s awake hours.
Pygmy hippos, also known as dwarf hippos, are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with fewer than 3,000 remaining in the wild. The zoo has seized on the excitement generated by Moo Deng, using her as the focal point of social media marketing—128 of its last 150 posts feature her. Merchandise inspired by the hippo is now available, alongside promotions from brands like Sephora, which launched a line of blush cosmetics based on Moo Deng.
Her unprecedented fame has attracted media attention, including coverage from Japanese television stations and endorsements from organizations like the Royal Thai Embassy, which praised her energetic and soothing presence. Moo Deng’s rise to celebrity status reflects not only her charm but also the intersection of wildlife conservation awareness and popular culture.
