Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij on Friday said he had assured the Japanese business community that Thailand’s gross domestic product GDP would continue to grow this year despite the recent political turmoil.
“Should the country be able to maintain the stability of the past 24 hours going forward from here, we should be able to recover fairly”
he said referring to a statement made at a seminar in which he participated on Friday in Tokyo. He allowed that the tourism sector, which accounts for 6 per cent of GDP, runs a risk of experiencing extensive damages in the rest of this year since various incidents arising from the political rally that shut down central Bangkok for many weeks had dealt a “disastrous” blow to the tourism industry. However, he forecast the Thai economy would enjoy a two-digit economic growth in the first quarter of this year. But the growth projection would be revised during April-June.
