Thailand is striving to become a leader in the future food industry by emphasizing innovation, safety, traceability, and environmental sustainability in its products.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand is positioning itself as a leader in the future food industry, focusing on innovative, safe, traceable, and environmentally friendly products to meet global demand for healthier and sustainable food options.
  • The future food sector in Thailand is thriving, with functional foods and ingredients dominating exports to key markets such as the United States, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
  • The government’s commitment to enhancing the future food industry is evident through the development of a ‘future food dashboard’ to support entrepreneurs, leveraging emerging trends, and fostering substantial growth within Thailand’s economy.

The Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with the private sector, plans to transform agriculture into a growth engine to meet global demand for healthier, sustainable food. The industry is categorized into functional, medical, organic, and alternative protein foods, with 2023 exports reaching 143 billion baht. Functional foods dominate, representing 89.7% of exports. Principal markets include the US, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia. A ‘future food dashboard’ by TPSO and TFA will support sector growth by providing comprehensive trade data.

BANGKOK (NNT) – Thailand, through the Ministry of Commerce, is establishing itself as a future food industry leader, focusing on innovative, safe, traceable, and environmentally friendly products. The plan, a collaboration between the government and the private sector, will transform agricultural products into a new economic growth engine by meeting the increasing global demand for healthier and sustainable food options.

The future food sector in Thailand is divided into four main categories: functional, medical, organic, and alternative protein. In 2023, the sector’s exports reached 143 billion baht, with functional foods and ingredients comprising 89.7% of all future food exports. The principal markets for these products include the United States, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia. In just the first four months of this year, exports in this sector amounted to 51.6 billion baht, with functional foods again dominating the exports, accounting for 90.8%. The Thai Product Standards Organization (TPSO) and the Thai Food Association (TFA) are developing a ‘future food dashboard’ on the Trade Intelligence System website to support this growing sector. This tool will provide comprehensive trade data to entrepreneurs and the public, aiding decision-making and strategy development.
