Thai Stock Market Slips Amid Global Economic Uncertainty

Bangkok, 11 April 2025 – Thailand’s benchmark SET Index fell 1.2% on Friday, extending losses for a third consecutive session as investors weighed weaker-than-expected export data and lingering concerns over global interest rates. The decline reflects broader market jitters ahead of key U.S. inflation figures due next week, which could influence Federal Reserve policy.

The SET Index closed at 1,420.50, its lowest level in two weeks, with losses led by the energy and banking sectors. Analysts attributed the drop to Thailand’s March export figures, which contracted by 3.1% year-on-year, missing forecasts. "The export slowdown suggests persistent challenges in global demand, particularly from China, a major trade partner," said Pimpa Limnukul, chief economist at Krungthai Bank. "Coupled with uncertainty around U.S. rate cuts, investors are adopting a cautious stance."

Global markets have been volatile as central banks signal a slower-than-expected easing of monetary policy. While Thailand’s central bank held rates steady last month, pressure mounts to support growth amid sluggish domestic consumption. Some analysts, however, remain optimistic. "Thailand’s tourism recovery and government stimulus measures could provide a floor for the market later this year," noted Nomura Securities strategist Sakda Sathit.

Looking ahead, traders will monitor U.S. inflation data and corporate earnings for clues on market direction. Meanwhile, Thai authorities are expected to unveil additional fiscal measures to bolster economic activity.
