Asian equities weakened on Wednesday despite another record-setting session on Wall
Street, as rising oil prices and renewed concerns over global bond yields offset
optimism about corporate earnings and AI-related growth. The **MSCI Asia-Pacific
index excluding Japan fell about 0.5%**, while Hong Kong and Singapore declined
and technology shares in South Korea also came under pressure.

### Key points

 * MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan fell roughly **0.5%**, with Hong Kong and South Korean
   technology shares among the decliners.
 * **Brent crude rose to about US$101.58 a barrel**, while US crude reached around
   US$90.22.
 * The US 10-year Treasury yield remains elevated as investors prepare for further
government debt auctions and await Federal Reserve policy signals.

The market reversal contrasts with Wall Street, where the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached
fresh records on Tuesday as investors anticipated strong corporate earnings and
continued AI investment. In Asia, however, higher energy prices are making investors
more cautious because they raise the risk of renewed inflation and tighter monetary
policy.

Oil prices rose as investors assessed escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis alongside continuing uncertainty over Middle Eastern
energy supplies. Brent was around **US$101.58 a barrel**, while US crude reached
approximately US$90.22.

Bond yields remain another source of pressure. The US 10-year Treasury yield has
stayed close to the highest levels in more than two decades, reflecting concerns
about inflation, fiscal deficits and the supply of government debt. For Asian emerging
markets, elevated US yields can reduce the relative attractiveness of local assets
and put pressure on currencies.

Thailand is particularly exposed to the combination of oil and global yields. Higher
energy prices raise the import bill and transport costs, while elevated US yields
can constrain the room for domestic monetary easing. The baht opened at around **
THB33.62 per US dollar**, slightly stronger than the previous close, helped by softer
dollar conditions and lower oil prices earlier in the session, but the currency
remains sensitive to global risk sentiment.

The broader regional picture is therefore mixed: AI and corporate earnings continue
to support equity valuations, but energy and financing costs are becoming stronger
counterweights. For Thailand, that tension comes at an awkward time as the country
deals with flood-related disruptions while trying to attract more technology investment.

**Why it matters:** Asia’s market rally is becoming increasingly dependent on whether
strong technology earnings can outweigh higher energy and financing costs. For Thailand,
sustained oil above US$100 and elevated US Treasury yields could complicate inflation,
baht and monetary-policy conditions just as flood damage creates additional domestic
economic pressure.
