RANONG (NBT WORLD) – In response to shifting trade routes due to instability in
Myanmar, the Thai government, led by the Ministry of Transport, is enhancing Ranong
Port’s capacity. Unrest in Myawaddy and Tachileik and disruptions at other border
checkpoints have led to a redirection of trade to Ranong, causing a 200% spike in
activity.

## Key Takeways

 * The Ministry of Transport in Thailand is enhancing Ranong Port due to increased
activity as cargo operators avoid unstable Myanmar trade routes. This has led
to a surge in port activity by 200%. The Port Authority of Thailand is expanding
facilities to meet the growing demand, creating new economic opportunities.
 * These enhancements align with the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) strategy,
bolstering Thailand‘s status as a regional logistics hub. The improvements aim
to provide stable cross-border trade with Myanmar and other markets, reflecting
Thailand‘s commitment to strengthening regional trade connections.
 * Ranong Port’s growth is significant, with fiscal year 2024 showing a 69% increase
in ship dockings and a 251% rise in cargo volume. The first quarter of 2025 saw
ship dockings grow by 91% and container processing surge by 458%. The Ministry
continues to improve infrastructure, ensuring long-term benefits.

To accommodate this surge, the Port Authority of Thailand is expanding docking facilities,
increasing container storage, and improving cargo handling. These upgrades align
with the Southern Economic Corridor strategy, enhancing Thailand’s position as a
logistics hub and fostering trade connections with Myanmar and other markets.
