The outcome of the US midterm elections is being closely monitored across Asia, with potentially significant consequences for Thailand’s export-driven economy. The United States remains one of Thailand’s most important trading partners, with Thai exports to the US valued at approximately US$72.6 billion in 2025, led by electrical and electronic products, machinery, rubber products and vehicles.

For Thailand’s electronics sector, the stakes are particularly high. Electronics and electrical appliances have been the primary drivers of Thai export growth, supported by rising global demand for AI infrastructure, semiconductors and data-centre technologies. Thai exports reached a record US$339.6 billion in 2025, with electronics playing a leading role. Any shift in US policy toward China, technology exports or semiconductor supply chains could directly affect investment and manufacturing activity in Thailand.

Thailand’s automotive and EV industries are also paying close attention. Motor vehicles and parts remain one of the country’s top export categories, accounting for more than 662 billion baht in exports during the first eight months of 2026. Future US trade measures and industrial policies could influence global production networks, investment decisions and demand for Thai-made vehicles and components.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s agricultural exporters, including rice, rubber and processed food producers, remain vulnerable to shifts in global trade patterns and tariff policies. Recent trade data show agricultural exports facing increasing competitive pressure despite strong performance in some processed food categories.

While the elections are a domestic US event, their impact could extend across global supply chains, trade flows and financial markets. For Thai businesses, the key question is whether post-election policies support stable economic engagement with Asia or deepen strategic and economic divisions between the United States and China.
