Thai Cabinet extends state of emergency for Covid by another month

Thailand’s Cabinet has agreed to extend the state of emergency to curb the Covid-19 pandemic by another month from the end of October

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha approved an extension of the state of emergency for another month. This is the eighth time that the state of emergency has been extended since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis in March.

The decree is deemed necessary by the government for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration to function. The state of emergency is thus extended until the 30th of November.

It gives Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha full authority to command the centre to combat the outbreak and allow compulsory quarantining of people arriving from abroad.

Thailand has only confirmed 3,759 coronavirus infections so far, with the most recent cases imported. There have been 59 deaths, one of the lowest casualties rate in the world.

PM wants armed forces support for government

General Natapol Nakpanich, the deputy army chief and deputy head of an ad hoc committee on the relaxation of COVID-19 control measures, said the extension of the state of emergency would rarely impact society because people could continue with their normal life and rallies or anti-government protests could be organized.
