Inside thousands of high-security bank vaults across Hong Kong, countless pieces
of inherited jewellery sit untouched in the dark. Millions of dollars in gold and
ancestral gemstones are locked away inside steel safety deposit boxes, too sentimental
to sell, yet too out of sync with contemporary lifestyles.

To Eleanor Yeh, founder and creative director of Etra Fine Jewellery, these pieces
represent an invisible archive of trapped stories waiting to be told. From her Hong
Kong atelier, she is helping clients transform old jewellery into pieces that feel
personal, wearable, and meaningful again through bespoke design and heirloom remodelling.

**The Chemistry of Skinship**

What separates fine jewellery from other objects of material luxury is its physical
intimacy. While a painting hangs on a wall and an architectural monument is viewed
from a distance, jewellery is meant to be lived in. "Jewellery’s different, because
it’s against our body," Eleanor explains. It warms through wear, balances on the
finger, and moves in rhythm with daily life. When a piece of jewellery fails to
connect emotionally, it is inevitably exiled to a life in storage.

Eleanor wants to make sure that does not happen. By stepping away from mass-produced,
one-size-fits-all designs, she invites clients to become partners in the creative
process. Under her guidance, jewellery becomes a vessel of memories, identity, and
the stories people choose to carry with them through life.

**A Life Lived Across Horizons**

Born in Taiwan, Eleanor moved to the United Kingdom for middle school, spending
two decades absorbing British traditions. After graduating from university, she
spent ten years working within the high-stakes front office of an investment bank.
A relocation to Tokyo for her husband’s career required her to resign, initiating
a ten-year chapter as a stay-at-home mother. As her children grew older, a sense
of restlessness prompted a desire to re-enter the professional world, leading her
to eventually establish her atelier in Hong Kong.

This multi-chaptered background has provided Eleanor with an international perspective
that avoids superficial "East-meets-West" design clichés. Instead, she draws on
the distinct philosophies of each place she has called home. Her two decades in
the UK instilled a deep appreciation for classic, enduring structures, while her
years in Tokyo introduced her to the aesthetic power of wabi-sabi, the Japanese
philosophy centred on restraint, balance, and the belief that less is more.

Eleanor’s actual path into the jewellery industry was equally unique, shaped by
a mix of analytical science and creative curiosity. Before she ever designed her
first piece, her education and early career in finance were heavily rooted in analytical
and structured thinking. Her eventual desire to re-enter the professional world
led her back to a creative spark from childhood. Growing up, her father was an avid
art collector. While he favoured austere, black-and-white ink paintings, Eleanor
found herself captivated by his collection of decorative arts, which was filled
with vibrant jade, amethyst, and colourful tourmalines.

When she decided to transition into jewellery, she naturally leaned on her structured,
analytical background rather than a purely creative one. This logical approach made
gemmology the perfect bridge for her varied background. To build a rigorous framework
for her curiosity, she studied Asian art history at SOAS, became a GIA Graduate
Gemmologist, and later combined this scientific foundation with formal design studies.
It was this distinct marriage of technical precision, global exposure, and artistic
vision that earned her the 2024 Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation Award for Excellence
in Jewellery Design, a global honour won for an intricate design inspired by the
architecture of the Basilica di Santa Croce during her travels to Italy.

Today, Eleanor calls Hong Kong home, drawn by the city’s intense energy and unmatched
position in the global trade. She draws on her own layered background to help her
equally well-travelled clients translate their own experiences into timeless pieces."
Hong Kong is probably the best place to be in Asia," she says. "It’s very energetic
and stressful at the same time, but it gives you that motivation to keep pushing."

**The Core of Sustainability**

At the core of Etra’s philosophy is a rejection of the "buy-and-discard" mentality
that permeates modern consumption. Eleanor champions meaningful ownership, encouraging
individuals to look inward and evaluate their true needs. In Etra’s remodelling
service, client heirlooms are carefully disassembled. The gold is weighed and sold
to specialised gold refiners who return it to local artisan workshops. The value
of this recycled gold is then credited back to the client’s budget toward a new
design, while gems are reset and reused.

This circular process allows clients to transform old possessions into functional,
modern designs without wasting raw resources. Eleanor recalls a recent project for
a finance executive who owned an old suite of heavy, outdated jewellery featuring
blue sapphires and diamonds from her mother. The client wanted a practical piece
she could wear every day to her corporate office. Eleanor unmounted the stones,
recycled the gold, and engineered a sleek, graduated necklace using the central
sapphires and diamonds. The client now wears it daily, and leftover stones remain
available for future pieces. "We’re keeping the memory alive," Eleanor says. "And
if she passes it on to her daughter, that memory continues perpetually."

This philosophy is one Eleanor models in her personal life and passes down to her
own children. She openly reflects on her own past mistakes of purchasing dozens
of fast-fashion accessories, only to realize that the total cost could have been
used to acquire a few high-quality, timeless investments. "Because we have so many
choices, we don’t know how to make choices," she says. "You have to ask yourself
the questions about what is really useful…to buy design with tomorrow in mind."

**The Architecture of Trust**

Because heirloom remodelling requires dismantling an object of immense sentimental
and financial value, Eleanor’s business operates on an architecture of trust. Every
project begins with conversation. She meets clients to understand their lifestyle,
personality, and story before any design work starts. "My objective is to understand
the client," she explains. She deliberately considers the long-term utility of a
piece. "Depending on their needs and lifestyle, I try to create something which
will stay with them, stay relevant, and evolve."

This focus on functionality is evident across all of Etra’s commissions. When a
gentleman recently approached Eleanor to design an engagement ring for his partner,
a professional athlete with a demanding training schedule, Eleanor spent hours analysing
the recipient’s active lifestyle as an athlete and trainer. The final design was
simple, secure, and specifically engineered to withstand rigorous physical activity
while maintaining an elegant, minimalist aesthetic.

**Intangible Values**

Over the years, Eleanor’s own understanding of luxury has shifted. It is no longer
defined by status or price tags, but rather by quality and a care for the environment.
This philosophy is exactly why she has no plans to scale Etra into a massive, corporate
brand. Instead, she chooses to stay agile and focused, dedicating herself entirely
to individual stories and preservation.

For Eleanor, the real reward of this slow, intentional process occurs when a client
sees and wears their completed piece for the first time. Seeing that connection
is what makes the entire journey worthwhile. The ultimate goal is simply for them
to wear it with confidence, happiness and joy. "When their faces light up, that’s
my job done," she smiles.
