**In 2025, Thailand’s Tourism Authority celebrates 65 years of growth, advancing
sustainable tourism through initiatives like Thailand Tourism Awards, 7Greens, and
STAR, attracting millions while supporting economic and cultural preservation.**

## The Journey of TAT: From Past to Present

On March 18, 2025, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) commemorates its 65th
anniversary. For decades, TAT has championed Thailand as a premier global tourism
hub, evolving from modest beginnings in 1924 when tourism promotion efforts began
under the State Railway of Thailand. By 1960, Thailand established the Tourism Organization
of Thailand, officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat.
This marked a significant pivot towards structured tourism strategies, transforming
TAT into a pioneering force in the industry. Over the years, the organization has
emphasized sustainable tourism, balancing economic growth with cultural preservation
and environmental conservation, thus setting a benchmark globally.

## Six Decades of TAT: Pioneering Growth, Innovation, and Sustainable Tourism

TAT has been instrumental since the 1960s in shaping Thailand’s tourism landscape.
From greeting 81,340 international tourists initially, numbers soared past one million
by the 1970s, catalyzing expansive campaigns. Landmark initiatives throughout the
1980s and 1990s, including “Land of a Thousand Smiles” and “Amazing Thailand,” and
the Thailand Tourism Festival, bolstered domestic tourism. In the 2000s, they launched“
Unseen Thailand” and “Thailand Grand Invitation,” promoting eco-friendly travel
through the 7 Greens initiative. Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic,
efforts like SHA and innovative campaigns like Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus helped
revitalize the industry, underscoring TAT‘s resilience and adaptability into the
2020s.

## TAT’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

TAT‘s leadership in sustainable tourism is evident through key initiatives like
the Thailand Tourism Awards, established in 1996 to encourage industry excellence.
Their 7Greens Initiative, started in 2008, fosters eco-friendly travel practices,
engaging communities and businesses alike in responsible tourism. SHA, launched
in 2020, set stringent health and safety standards post-pandemic. The 2023 Sustainable
Tourism Goals (STGs) and STAR Initiative further enhance TAT‘s commitment, focusing
on environmental conservation and sustainable economic growth. As TAT celebrates
65 years, it looks forward by anticipating substantial revenue from both international(
39 million) and domestic (205 million trips) tourists in 2025, reinforcing Thailand’s
status as a global tourism leader.
