The Tourism Authority of Thailand launches the ‘Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2025,’ celebrating Thai New Year with over 100 events nationwide, emphasizing cultural heritage and global recognition.
The Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2025 is a grand celebration of the traditional Thai New Year, known as Songkran, scheduled to take place from April 11–15, 2025, with its central event at Sanam Luang in Bangkok, Thailand. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023, Songkran marks the astrological passage of the sun into Aries, symbolizing renewal and purification. This festival, under the theme “Cool & Joyful Maha Songkran,” is part of the broader “Thailand Summer Festivals” initiative and aims to elevate Thailand’s cultural heritage onto the global stage while boosting tourism and economic growth.
The event features a blend of traditional and modern elements, including eight spectacular carnival parades along Ratchadamnoen Klang Road on April 12–13, showcasing Thailand’s regional diversity with vibrant floats, music, and performances. Highlights at Sanam Luang include live concerts by top Thai artists, an EDM-fueled water party, a drone light show, and cultural activities like merit-making, Buddha image bathing, and pouring water on elders’ hands as a sign of respect. A “5-Region Songkran Plaza” will highlight unique traditions from across Thailand, alongside a temple fair with sand pagoda building and classic games. The festival also offers a Thailand Food Market with regional dishes and immersive experiences tied to Thai soft power, such as Muay Thai demonstrations.

Organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, with a budget of 193 million baht (including 153 million from the national budget and 40 million from TAT), the festival is expected to draw over 800,000 tourists, generating approximately 3.2 billion baht in revenue. Beyond Bangkok, celebrations will span 17 provinces, with notable events like the Wan Lai Pattaya-Naklua Festival in Pattaya from April 17–19. An official Songkran theme song in 20 languages, including Thai, English, and Chinese, will further engage international audiences, reinforcing Thailand’s aim to position itself as a world-class festival hub while preserving its cultural roots.
