Thailand is a popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia and ranks among the top ten most visited places in the world. Its rich culture and stunning beaches draw millions of tourists annually.

Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand’s online hotel and travel booking industry has experienced a significant recovery and rapid growth.

The tourism industry in Thailand is growing, currently ranking ninth in the world’s most visited countries list. This growth has been driving the hospitality industry in the country, leading to an increase in key indicators of hotel performance, as well as tourist receipts and revenue generated from tourism.

The Hospitality Industry in Thailand Market size is estimated at USD 7.23 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach USD 24.12 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 27.24% during the forecast period (2024-2029), according to a recent Mordor Intelligence report.

In this article, we will explore how travel platforms such as Travelio, Agoda, and Airbnb change how people travel in Thailand.

Who is leading the travel booking market in Thailand?

Agoda is the leading travel booking platform in Thailand, followed by Booking.com and Traveloka. Agoda offers a wide variety of hotels and non-hotel accommodations, while Airbnb is a platform that connects travelers with local hosts who offer their spare rooms or entire homes for rent.

Together these platforms are increasing the availability of non-hotel accommodation options in Thailand like apartments and home rentals. They offer travelers more choice, flexibility and potentially lower prices than traditional hotels.

Traveloka is an international platform allowing travelers to rent apartments, villas, and houses in Thailand and other Asian countries. The company says that their prices are lower, the space is more, the facilities and amenities are better than hotels, and the cancellation policy is more accessible, too. Traveloka’s comprehensive product portfolio includes transport booking services such as flight tickets, bus, trains, car rental, airport transfer, as well as access to the largest accommodation inventory in Southeast Asia.

Agoda offers hotel and non-hotel accommodation options in Thailand and worldwide. The company has a large inventory of properties, ranging from budget hostels to luxury resorts, apartments, villas, and homestays. Agoda’s main advantage is its strong presence and reputation in Asia and its integration with other online travel agencies such as Booking.com and Expedia. However, Agoda also faces challenges such as maintaining quality control, dealing with fraud, among others.

Airbnb is a platform that connects travelers with local hosts who offer their spare rooms or entire homes for rent. Airbnb’s main advantage is its global brand recognition and user base, as well as its innovation and creativity. Airbnb also faces legal challenges, as short-term rentals are technically illegal without a hotel license.

According to a report by Statista, Agoda has been leading hotel rentals in Thailand and is growing at a CAGR of 5.2 percent from 2020 to 2024. The report estimates that Agoda will have 8.5 million guests and 4.2 million nights booked in Thailand in 2024, with an average daily rate of $50.

Living Anywhere – Taking Life on the Road

In 2021, remote working became more than just a trend; it became a reality for many people. With the lines between work and leisure blurring, travelers are no longer confined to traditional vacation seasons. Instead, they’re opting for longer stays in different locations. Platforms like Airbnb allow travelers to test new neighborhoods before making long-term commitments. From suburban escapes to rural retreats, people are embracing the freedom to live and work away from home.

Technology has transformed every phase of hospitality – from booking accommodations to personalizing stays. Mobile devices empower travelers to enrich their experiences by accessing information on the go. Platforms like Travelio, Agoda, and Airbnb leverage technology to provide seamless booking processes and enhance guest satisfaction.

Hotels VS apartments rentals industry in Thailand

The latest market trends show that the preferred option for tourists or digital nomads traveling to Thailand is apartments offered by platforms like Airbnb. Meanwhile, Thai locals tend to choose hotels provided by platforms like Agoda.

Hotels and apartment rentals both play significant roles in the Thai hospitality sector. Each has its own advantages and caters to different types of travelers. Let’s delve into the details:

Hotels in Thailand

  1. Variety and Amenities: Thailand boasts a wide range of hotels, from budget-friendly options to luxurious five-star establishments. Hotels often offer amenities such as swimming pools, fitness centers, restaurants, and concierge services.
  2. Convenience: Hotels are convenient for short stays or travelers who prefer daily housekeeping and room service. They are especially popular among tourists exploring different cities or regions.
  3. Language Barrier: Most hotel staff speak English, making communication easier for international guests.
  4. Security: Hotels typically have 24-hour security and controlled access, ensuring guest safety.
  5. Tourist Hotspots: Many hotels are strategically located near popular tourist attractions, shopping centers, and entertainment districts.

Apartment Rentals in Thailand

  1. Long-Term Stays: Apartments are ideal for travelers planning extended stays or expatriates relocating to Thailand. They offer more space and privacy than hotel rooms.
  2. Cost-Effective: Apartment rentals can be more cost-effective than hotels, especially for stays of a month or longer.
  3. Fully Furnished: Most apartments come fully furnished with kitchenettes or full kitchens, allowing guests to cook their own meals.
  4. Language Barrier: Some landlords may only speak Thai, which can be challenging for non-Thai speakers when negotiating leases or dealing with maintenance issues.
  5. Local Experience: Renting an apartment provides a glimpse into local life and culture, as you’ll be living in residential neighborhoods rather than tourist areas.
  6. Flexibility: Apartments allow you to create your own routine and live like a local.

Travelio, Agoda, and Airbnb are disrupting the travel industry in Thailand by facilitating an increase in travel choices, convenience, and value, as well as opportunities and additional income for individuals, whether they are local or foreign.

Housing is crucial for tourists and expats visiting or traveling to Thailand. Often, the decision to stay in a hotel or an apartment may change depending on the location, price, and length of the stay, among other factors.

Usually hotels are more convenient, secure, and reliable than Airbnb for Thai people, who are more familiar with the hotel industry and may have concerns about the legality and safety of Airbnb.

On the other side, Airbnb is more affordable, flexible, and diverse than hotels for tourists, who seek more variety, uniqueness, and local experiences

However, they still might face some challenges, like dealing with different local regulations, maintaining quality control, and dealing with fraud.
