Efforts by the Royal Thai Embassy RTE and the UK branch of the Tourism Authority of Thailand TAT to downgrade the FCO’s travel advice to Thailand have paid dividends.

“This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to the Summary and the Terrorism and Security section. “The overall level of the advice has changed; we no longer advise against all but essential travel to the whole country. We advise against all travel to specific parts of Thailand. We advise against all but essential travel to other specific parts of Thailand, including Bangkok.”

There is a high threat from terrorism throughout Thailand. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. You should exercise caution at all times.

We advise against all but essential travel to Bangkok, in light of ongoing political demonstrations, many of which have resulted in violence.   This advice does not apply to passengers transiting Bangkok airport on their way to other destinations.

The political situation in Thailand is tense and uncertain. Over recent years there have been instances of civil and political unrest resulting in large-scale demonstrations and, in some cases violence. British citizens are advised to exercise extreme caution throughout Thailand and avoid demonstrations or large gatherings, which may turn violent.
