Suvarnabhumi Airport has opened a new security checking point for outgoing passengers since June 15. The new passenger screening unit located on the eastern side of the passenger terminal has proved efficient in cutting down queues of outgoing travelers.

Mr. Somchai Sawasdipol, Suvarnabhumi Airport Director, said the new inspection point covers an area of 1,600 square meters and is equipped with a dozen of baggage X-ray machines, and two 3-dimensional baggage X-ray system known as CT 80. Passengers are inspected via six walk-through metal detectors and two body scanners. The number of passengers that can be screened per hour is 3,600.

The new screening area is on the mezzanine floor above the passport control unit for international departures. Because of the presence of the new area, an alteration has been made to the security checking procedure for outgoing passengers. Previously, passengers usually had to walk through the immigration counter before having their luggage scanned for suspicious items. Air travelers are now requested to have their luggage scanned first. This system will allow them to leave the prohibited items with relatives before proceeding to the immigration counters.
