Thailand has postponed trade discussions with the United States to reassess key issues, signaling a careful approach to the negotiations.
Thailand Delays U.S. Tariff Talks for Further Review
Thailand has delayed trade negotiations with the United States, originally scheduled for April 23, 2025, to review critical trade issues, as announced by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The postponement follows U.S. requests for Thailand to address unspecified trade-related concerns, with a new meeting date yet to be confirmed. Thailand faces a 36% tariff on its exports to the U.S., one of the highest in Southeast Asia, under President Donald Trump’s trade policies, which could lead to a $7-8 billion export loss if implemented. The U.S., Thailand’s largest export market, accounted for $54.96 billion (18.3%) of shipments last year, with a trade surplus of $45.6 billion according to U.S. data.
The Thai government is preparing to adjust its trade strategy, including increasing U.S. imports (e.g., corn, soybeans, LNG, and aircraft), lowering tariffs on U.S. goods, and addressing non-tariff barriers to reduce the trade surplus. Thai officials are also reviewing agricultural exports and stricter inspections to prevent third countries from using Thailand to bypass U.S. tariffs. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, leading the negotiations, noted ongoing working-level talks despite the delay, emphasizing a cautious approach to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes. The 90-day tariff pause announced earlier provides Thailand additional time to refine its strategy.
The decision to delay the talks reflects Thailand’s cautious approach in navigating international trade deals. Officials in Bangkok emphasize that a careful review is crucial to avoid any adverse effects on local industries and businesses. This pause also provides Thailand with the opportunity to gather input from various stakeholders, ensuring that their concerns are addressed in potential negotiations with the U.S.
While the postponement might temporarily halt progress in trade discussions, it demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to making informed decisions. The review process is seen as a necessary step for fostering sustainable economic growth and reinforcing Thailand’s position in global trade. Both nations are hopeful that the talks will eventually resume, leading to agreements that strengthen their bilateral economic relationship.
