Several foreign embassies in Thailand have issued alerts to inform their citizens of political gatherings this weekend.

An alert issued by the U.S. embassy in Bangkok said political gatherings had been planned at various locations across Thailand and that the skytrain system in Bangkok could become a spontaneous protest site.

These demonstrations may heavily disrupt mass transit and traffic.  U.S. government personnel have been advised to avoid all demonstrations and BTS locations during times of protest.

The statement went on to say that the Thai government had on Thursday declared a state of emergency for the capital city.

The British embassy warned its citizens in Thailand and those planning to travel to the kingdom to avoid all protest venues and be mindful of their actions in public, while the government of Canada is recommending a “high degree of caution.”

As of 0400 on Thursday 15 October, a ‘Declaration of a Serious Emergency Situation in Bangkok’ is in place. It will remain until further notice. Gatherings in Bangkok of five or more people are prohibited.

The publication of news or online messages that “may create fear and are deemed to harm national security” is prohibited.

Security officials have the right to arrest, detain and seize the property of anyone suspected of threatening national security. You should follow the instructions of local security officials.
