In a bold move to future-proof its telecom operations, Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group has unveiled a strategic pivot into artificial intelligence (AI) and data infrastructure.
This month, the conglomerate inaugurated the country’s first hyperscale data center purpose-built for AI and machine learning—an industrial powerhouse with a processing capacity exceeding 20 megawatts, located just outside Bangkok.
This investment is part of CP’s broader plan to pour more than 10 billion baht (approx. $305 million) into digital infrastructure by 2027. With its telecom arm True seeing stagnation in mobile subscriptions—down by around 600,000 in just one quarter—CP is turning to edge computing and AI as a growth catalyst.
A standout element of this transformation is CP’s partnership with Intel, which will merge Intel’s Edge AI hardware with True’s 5G network to deliver corporate AI solutions. These are expected to revolutionize sectors like healthcare, where AI can dramatically speed up complex diagnoses and enable remote rehabilitation.
The challenge ahead? Navigating Thailand’s shrinking population. With projections showing a population drop of over 10% by 2060, CP must align its technology-driven services with both demographic realities and the evolving demands of an AI-powered economy.
Under new telecom leadership and facing increasing competition from rivals like AIS and Oracle, CP is betting that data—and what it enables—will be its next telecom frontier.
